Merbonas material intelligence

Better choices start with better questions.

A practical guide to fibre specifications and manufacturing processes, created to support productive technical conversations.

01 / TECHNICAL BASICS

How to describe the fibre you need.

Clear specifications help avoid mismatches in processing and final product performance.

Polymer
PET, PP, PE, PA, regenerated cellulosic or specialist chemistry.
Fineness
Usually expressed in dtex or denier; 1 denier ≈ 1.111 dtex.
Cut length
Length in millimetres; must fit the production technology.
Profile & finish
Solid or hollow, crimp, siliconisation, wettability, colour, functional finish.
Proof
Ask for grade-specific specifications, test reports and certificates where relevant.
02 / MANUFACTURING PROCESSES

Match fibres to the process.

The same polymer can behave differently when its fineness, cut length, finish or cross-section changes.

Wet-laid
Short-cut fibre length, dispersion, wetting and process chemistry are central.
Spunlace
Fibre fineness, entanglement and absorbency influence the final substrate.
Needlepunch
Staple length, crimp and tenacity affect web integrity and mechanical properties.
Thermobond
Polymer combination, bond-temperature window and thermal stability need testing.
Filling
Loft, resilience, handle, opening method and wash performance matter.
03 / RESPONSIBLE SOURCING

Read beyond the green label.

Material selection should be supported by evidence instead of broad environmental promises.

Recycled content
Confirm whether the input is post-consumer or pre-consumer and how it is documented.
Certifications
Verify certificate validity, exact scope and whether the purchased grade is covered.
Bio-based
Bio-based is a feedstock description and does not itself prove biodegradability.
Biodegradability
Specific environmental conditions and test standards are required for credible claims.
Fit for purpose
Product performance, service life and processing yield remain relevant to material choices.
